Persians live 10 to 15 years. Polycystic kidney disease is a serious hereditary condition and breeders must test for PKD before breeding. Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome causes breathing difficulties given their flat face. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, progressive retinal atrophy, and dental malocclusion also occur. Source only from PKD tested breeders and schedule regular vet visits with respiratory and kidney monitoring.

Daily brushing is non negotiable for a Persian. Their long, thick coat mats within days without consistent care. Use a wide tooth comb and a slicker brush daily to stay ahead of tangles. Clean the face daily around the eyes to prevent staining and skin infection. Bathe every four to six weeks. Trim nails every two weeks. This is a high commitment coat.

Persians are calm, gentle, and low energy. Short, gentle play sessions suit them well. Avoid vigorous exercise since their flat face limits airflow. Provide soft toys, a low cat tree, and quiet indoor enrichment. Two short sessions of five to ten minutes daily keeps most Persians content. They prefer a calm, predictable household.

Persians are sweet and docile but not particularly motivated by training. They learn their litter box immediately and adapt to household routines. Gentle positive reinforcement with treats works for basic behaviors. They are not boundary testing cats. Early handling and socialization builds a calm, confident adult.

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with wet food included to support kidney health. Persians are prone to obesity given their low activity level so control portions carefully. Choose foods with real meat first. Monitor kidney function through annual blood work. Always provide fresh water and avoid free feeding.

The Persian has one of the longest histories of any recognized cat breed, with longhaired cats brought from Persia and Turkey to Europe by travelers in the 1500s. Italian nobleman Pietro della Valle brought cats from Persia to Europe around 1620. British and French aristocracy prized the breed and Queen Victoria herself kept blue Persians. The breed dominated early cat shows from the very first exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1871. The extreme flat faced type developed gradually through selective breeding in the 20th century.
