Himalayans live 9 to 15 years. Their flat face causes Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome and breathing difficulties. Polycystic kidney disease is a serious hereditary concern and breeders must test for PKD before breeding. Dental malocclusion and chronic eye drainage from their facial structure also occur. Your Himalayan has a long, thick, silky coat that needs daily brushing to prevent serious matting. This is one of the highest grooming demands of any cat breed. Many owners keep a shorter lion clip to reduce maintenance. Clean the face daily around the eyes to prevent staining. Bathe every four to six weeks. Trim nails every two weeks.

Himalayans are calm and gentle with low to moderate activity levels. They enjoy quiet play sessions but prefer lounging and companionship over intense activity. Avoid exercise in heat given their breathing limitations. Provide gentle interactive toys and a low cat tree. Two short, gentle play sessions daily keeps most Himalayans content.

Himalayans are sweet, docile, and generally easy to manage. They learn litter box habits immediately and adapt to routines well. Use treat rewards and gentle interaction for training basic behaviors. They are not demanding or boundary testing cats. Early socialization builds a calm, confident adult.

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with wet food included to support kidney health. Monitor weight carefully since Himalayans are less active and gain weight easily. The Himalayan developed in the United States in the 1930s when breeders set out to create a cat with Persian body type and Siamese color point markings. Harvard medical researchers Virginia Cobb and Clyde Keeler began the early experimental crosses. Breeder Marguerita Goforth produced the first recognized Himalayan in the 1950s. The CFA recognized the Himalayan as a separate breed in 1957 but later reclassified it as a color division of the Persian. Today it remains enormously popular worldwide.
