Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Toyger cats live 12 to 15 years and are a generally healthy breed. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs occasionally and cardiac screening of breeding cats matters. Heart murmurs have been noted in the breed. As a relatively new breed with a limited population, genetic diversity requires careful management by breeders. Annual vet visits with cardiac monitoring protect long term health.

Grooming

Your Toyger has a short, thick, plush coat with bold striped markings. Brush once or twice a week to remove loose hair and keep the coat shiny. Their coat is easy to maintain and they groom themselves well. Bathe only occasionally. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Toygers are moderately active, playful, and enjoy daily interaction with their owners. They like interactive wand toys, puzzle feeders, and games. They adapt well to indoor life. Two play sessions of ten to fifteen minutes daily keeps most Toygers content and physically healthy. They also enjoy leash walks when trained from kittenhood.

Training

Toygers are intelligent and respond well to treat based positive reinforcement. They learn their name, tricks, and leash walking readily. They are social, confident cats that handle new people and situations well. Socialize kittens early. Their outgoing temperament and curiosity make training sessions engaging and productive.

Nutrition

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with measured portions. Toygers are moderately active so monitor portions to prevent weight gain. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Wet food supports hydration. Always provide fresh water. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding.

History

The Toyger was developed by American breeder Judy Sugden starting in the 1980s. Sugden, the daughter of Bengal cat founder Jean Mill, noticed mackerel tabby markings on her domestic cat and set out to create a cat with the bold, circular striped pattern of a tiger rather than the spotted or marbled pattern. She crossed striped domestic cats with Bengals and introduced a street cat from India to add circular head markings. TICA accepted the Toyger for registration in 1993 and granted full championship status in 2007.
