Selkirk Rex Cat

Selkirk Rex cats live 14 to 15 years. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polycystic kidney disease occur in the breed since Persian cats were used in early development. Request PKD negative and cardiac testing documentation from breeders. Hip dysplasia also occurs occasionally. Annual vet visits with cardiac and kidney monitoring protect long term health.

Your Selkirk Rex has a curly, plush coat that requires brushing two to three times a week. Use a wide tooth comb and a gentle hand since the curls tangle easily with rough handling. Shorthaired Selkirks need less frequent brushing than longhaired individuals. Bathe every four to six weeks. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Selkirk Rex cats are moderately playful and social. They enjoy interactive wand toys, puzzle feeders, and relaxed games with their owners. They are neither hyperactive nor sedentary. Two play sessions of ten to fifteen minutes daily keeps most Selkirks physically satisfied. They adapt well to indoor life.

Selkirk Rex cats are patient, tolerant, and sociable. They respond well to treat based positive reinforcement and learn routines and basic tricks readily. They enjoy human company and handle being handled calmly. Socialize kittens early. Their easy going temperament makes them one of the simpler breeds to train and live with.

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with measured portions. Monitor weight monthly since Selkirks can gain weight if underfed in play. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Wet food supports hydration and kidney health given their Persian ancestry. Always provide fresh water and avoid free feeding.

The Selkirk Rex originated in Montana in 1987 when a curly coated kitten was born in a litter at a shelter. Persian breeder Jeri Newman adopted the kitten and named her Miss DePesto after noticing her unusual curls. Newman crossed Miss DePesto with a Persian male and produced both curly and straight coated kittens, confirming the curl was a dominant gene. Newman named the breed after the Selkirk Mountains near her home. TICA recognized the Selkirk Rex in 1990 and the CFA in 2000.
