Detailed Breed Information

Health

Nederlandse Kooikerhondjes typically live 12 to 14 years. Hereditary conditions affecting the immune system and certain eye conditions occur occasionally in the breed. Being a relatively rare breed, responsible breeding and genetic testing matter for long-term health. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, sturdy breed.

Grooming

That medium-length, feathered coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Their long ears require regular checks and cleaning. Feathering on the legs and tail needs occasional trimming. Bathe as needed, drying thoroughly afterward.

Exercise

Bred for luring ducks into traps, Nederlandse Kooikerhondjes need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, fetch, and field-style games suit their playful, energetic nature well. They genuinely love water activities given their working heritage. Mental stimulation through games keeps them happily engaged.

Training

Intelligent and eager to please, Nederlandse Kooikerhondjes generally train well with patient, positive methods. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, alert temperament. They thrive with a consistent, engaged handler. This breed genuinely enjoys learning and excels in obedience and agility activities.

Nutrition

A quality medium-breed formula with good protein suits their active lifestyle well. Two measured meals daily work well for this breed. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise or water activity. Watch their weight during less active periods.

History

Developed in the Netherlands centuries ago, this breed was bred specifically for "kooikerwerk" — luring ducks into narrow canals leading to traps using their distinctive white-tipped tail as a lure. The breed nearly went extinct during World War II before a dedicated Dutch breeder revived the population from just a handful of survivors. The breed remains relatively rare outside the Netherlands but is treasured for its cheerful, water-loving nature.
