Turkish Angora

Turkish Angoras live 12 to 18 years. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the primary hereditary concern. White cats with odd eyes or blue eyes carry a higher risk of deafness, particularly on the white side of the face. Ataxia, a fatal neurological condition affecting kittens, occurs in the breed. Responsible breeders avoid carrier pairings that produce ataxia. Annual vet visits and hearing evaluation for white kittens protect long term health.

Your Turkish Angora has a long, fine, silky single layer coat that requires brushing two to three times a week. The coat has no undercoat so it mats less than most longhaired breeds. Shedding is heavier in spring. Bathe every four to six weeks to keep the coat clean and flowing. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Turkish Angoras are athletic, agile, and active. They love climbing, jumping, and interactive games. They are graceful, fast cats who enjoy running and leaping. Provide tall cat trees, wand toys, and two vigorous play sessions daily. Without enough stimulation they become restless and inventive in ways you may not appreciate.

Turkish Angoras are intelligent, opinionated, and highly trainable. They respond well to treat rewards and learn tricks, leash walking, and games quickly. They can be bossy and like things done their way, which makes early boundary setting important. Socialize kittens from day one. Their quick mind and confident nature make training rewarding when you stay consistent.

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with measured portions. Turkish Angoras are active cats that stay lean naturally. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Always provide fresh water. Monitor weight monthly and adjust portions if activity level changes.

The Turkish Angora is one of the oldest and most natural cat breeds, originating in the Ankara region of Turkey, formerly known as Angora. These cats appear in European records as far back as the 1600s when French naturalist Nicholas Fabri de Peiresc brought longhaired cats from Turkey to France. The breed nearly disappeared as Persians overtook them in popularity. The Ankara Zoo began a dedicated breeding program in the early 1900s to preserve the true Turkish Angora. The CFA recognized the breed in 1968.
