Detailed Breed Information

Health

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne typically lives 12 to 14 years. Their long back puts them at risk for intervertebral disc disease, so limit jumping from furniture or vehicles. Ear infections can develop given their long floppy ears. Eye conditions and skin issues also appear in the breed. Keep your dog lean to protect the spine long term.

Grooming

The rough, wiry coat needs brushing twice a week. Hand-stripping once or twice a year maintains the proper texture and removes dead coat. Check ears weekly and clean them to prevent infection. Bathe monthly or when your dog gets into something. Trim nails every three to four weeks.

Exercise

Your Basset Fauve de Bretagne needs 45 to 60 minutes of activity daily. They love scent work and follow their nose enthusiastically on walks. Keep them on a leash outdoors since their tracking instinct overrides recall easily. Secure fencing in your yard matters with this breed.

Training

This breed is independent and follows its nose first, which can make training feel like a negotiation. Positive reinforcement with food rewards works best. Keep sessions short and interesting. Start early, socialize widely, and be patient. Reliable recall is possible but takes consistent work.

Nutrition

Feed a small-to-medium breed diet with quality protein twice daily. Extra weight is a real problem for this breed because of the strain it puts on their long spine. Measure portions carefully and keep treats minimal. Check body condition monthly rather than relying only on the scale.

History

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne comes from Brittany in northwestern France, bred as a compact scent hound that hunters could follow on foot through dense scrubland. Hunters valued their strong nose, stamina, and cheerful persistence on the trail of rabbit and hare. The breed survived the French Revolution when larger, more expensive hounds did not. Today it remains popular among French hunters and is slowly gaining recognition internationally.
