Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels typically live 9 to 14 years. Mitral valve disease is unfortunately very common in the breed and is the leading health concern, so regular cardiac checkups matter greatly. Syringomyelia, a neurological condition, also occurs given their skull shape. Ear infections are common too given their floppy ears.

That silky, feathered coat needs brushing several times a week to prevent matting, especially on the ears and legs. Bathe every two to three weeks. Their long ears need regular checks and cleaning to prevent infection. Nail trims and dental care round out the routine.

This affectionate breed needs about 30 to 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks and play sessions suit their moderate energy well. They genuinely love being included in family activities of any kind. Mental stimulation through games keeps their sweet, social nature satisfied.

Eager to please and gentle, Cavaliers are a genuine joy to train. Positive reinforcement with treats and praise works wonderfully. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, affectionate temperament. They can develop separation anxiety, so building independence early helps.

A small-breed formula with quality protein suits this affectionate dog well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as Cavaliers are notorious for begging and gaining weight easily. Fresh water should always be available.

Descended from small spaniels favored by British royalty for centuries, this breed takes its name directly from King Charles II, who was rarely seen without his spaniels nearby. The modern Cavalier was developed in the 1920s to recreate the longer-nosed look seen in old paintings of royal spaniels. The breed gained AKC recognition in 1995 and remains one of the most beloved toy breeds today.
