Havanese dogs typically live 14 to 16 years, an excellent lifespan for a small breed. Patellar luxation and dental crowding are the main concerns given their tiny size. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur occasionally too. Otherwise, this is a hardy, long-living little companion.

That long, silky coat needs brushing every couple of days to prevent matting close to the skin. Many owners keep the coat in a shorter, easier-to-manage puppy cut. Bathe every two to three weeks. Their face needs regular wiping to avoid tear staining.

This small breed has cheerful, moderate energy and needs about 30 minutes of activity daily. Short walks and indoor play sessions suit them well. They genuinely enjoy learning tricks and interactive games. Mental stimulation matters just as much as physical movement for this playful little dog.

Intelligent and eager to please, Havanese dogs are a genuine joy to train. Positive reinforcement with treats and praise works wonderfully. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, sociable temperament. They form deep attachments and thrive on close companionship with their owner.

A small-breed formula with quality protein suits this little dog well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as small dogs gain weight quickly on excess treats. Fresh water should always be available.

The national dog of Cuba, the Havanese descends from small companion dogs brought by Spanish settlers and refined on the island over centuries. Cuban aristocracy favored the breed as a beloved household companion. The breed nearly disappeared after the Cuban Revolution, surviving through a small number of dogs brought to America by emigrating families. Dedicated breeders rebuilt the population, and it remains a cheerful, affectionate companion today.
