Health

Silky Terriers live 13 to 15 years. Patellar luxation, Legg Calve Perthes disease, and tracheal collapse occur in the breed. Epilepsy and diabetes mellitus are also documented in some lines. Source from health tested breeders and use a harness rather than a collar to reduce tracheal pressure. Annual vet visits catch problems early.

Grooming

Your Silky Terrier has a long, fine coat that needs brushing every day to prevent tangles. The coat parts down the back and flows to the sides, which means any mat you miss tightens quickly against the skin. Bathe every two to three weeks. Trim hair around the eyes and paws for comfort. Check ears weekly and trim nails every three weeks.

Exercise

Your Silky Terrier needs 30 to 45 minutes of active exercise daily. Walks and backyard play match their spirited energy well. Secure fencing is essential since they have genuine prey drive and dig efficiently. Mental stimulation through training and puzzle games keeps their sharp mind satisfied between physical activities.

Training

Silky Terriers are intelligent and quicker to learn than many terrier breeds. Use positive reinforcement with food and praise. Keep sessions short and varied. Start socialization early since they can be bold with larger dogs and wary of strangers. Consistent boundaries from puppyhood prevent them from running the household.

Nutrition

Feed a quality small breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Silky Terriers can gain weight if exercise decreases. Keep treats minimal and calorie conscious. Monitor body condition monthly. Fresh water should always be available.

History

The Silky Terrier developed in Australia in the late 1800s through crosses between Australian Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers brought by British settlers. Breeders aimed for a compact, silky coated companion that kept the terrier spirit of the Australian parent. The breed was initially called the Sydney Silky after the city where it developed. Australian and American breeders disagreed for years on the standard before arriving at a consistent type. The AKC recognized the Silky Terrier in 1959.
