Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Borzois typically live 9 to 14 years. Bloat is a serious risk given their deep chest, so meal management really matters. Their slim build means anesthesia sensitivity is something to flag with your vet. Hip dysplasia and certain heart conditions also occur occasionally.

Grooming

That long, silky coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Feathering on the legs, ears, and tail needs the most attention. Bathe every few weeks with a quality shampoo and conditioner. Nail trims and dental care round out the routine.

Exercise

Bred to chase wolves across open Russian terrain, Borzois need close to an hour of real running time daily. A securely fenced area is essential given their incredible speed and strong prey drive. They're surprisingly calm and relaxed indoors once exercised. Off-leash recall is genuinely unreliable once something catches their eye.

Training

Independent and dignified, Borzois are not eager-to-please dogs in the typical sense. Positive reinforcement with patience produces the best results. Their prey drive is essentially untrainable, so secure fencing matters more than recall work. Early socialization helps shape a confident, well-adjusted adult.

Nutrition

Borzois look naturally lean even at a healthy weight, which can worry new owners. A high-quality protein-rich diet suits their athletic build well. Two measured meals daily reduce bloat risk in this deep-chested breed. Avoid heavy exercise right after eating.

History

Developed by Russian nobility centuries ago, the Borzoi was bred to hunt wolves alongside mounted hunters across vast open terrain. Their speed and sighthound instincts made them prized hunting companions of the Russian aristocracy. The breed nearly vanished after the Russian Revolution before being preserved by enthusiasts abroad. Today it remains an elegant, striking sighthound.
