Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Irish Setters typically live 12 to 15 years. Hip dysplasia and bloat are concerns given their deep-chested, athletic build. Progressive retinal atrophy and hypothyroidism also occur in the breed. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, energetic sporting breed.

Grooming

That silky, mahogany-red coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks helps maintain the coat's flowing appearance. Bathe every few weeks. Ears need regular checks given their floppy shape.

Exercise

Bred as a versatile bird-hunting companion, Irish Setters need close to an hour of activity daily. Running, field work, and active play suit their athletic, exuberant nature well. They have real stamina and a notably playful spirit even into adulthood. Mental stimulation through scent and retrieving games keeps them genuinely engaged.

Training

Intelligent and eager to please, Irish Setters generally train well with patient, positive methods, though their exuberance can make focus a challenge. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, energetic temperament. They thrive with an active handler who gives them purpose. This breed genuinely enjoys learning and field work.

Nutrition

A quality medium-to-large breed formula with good protein suits their active sporting lifestyle. Two measured meals daily reduce bloat risk in this deep-chested breed. Coat-supporting nutrients like omega-3s help maintain that signature red coat. Fresh water should always be available, especially after field activity.

History

Developed in Ireland in the 1700s, the Irish Setter was bred for pointing game birds across the Irish countryside, combining English Setter, Spaniel, and Pointer bloodlines. Their striking mahogany-red coat became a defining feature as breeders favored the solid color over the original red-and-white pattern. The breed gained enormous popularity in America through the mid-1900s. Today it remains a cherished, exuberant sporting and family companion.
