Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Presa Canarios live 9 to 11 years on average. Hip and elbow dysplasia are real concerns given their large, heavy build. Bloat can hit fast in deep-chested breeds like this one, so feed two smaller meals and skip the exercise right after eating. Heart disease shows up in some lines too. Keep your dog lean and get regular checkups to stay ahead of problems.

Grooming

The short, coarse coat is easy to manage. Brush once a week with a rubber mitt to remove loose hair and keep the skin healthy. Bathe only when your dog genuinely needs it. Check ears weekly, trim nails every three to four weeks, and brush teeth regularly. That covers everything.

Exercise

Your Presa Canario needs around 60 minutes of exercise daily. Long walks, structured play sessions, and yard time all work well. This breed has real strength and stamina, so use a leash in public at all times. Without consistent activity, boredom sets in and behavior becomes difficult to manage.

Training

This breed is intelligent but dominant, and it needs a confident, experienced owner from day one. Start socialization and obedience training as a puppy. Use firm, consistent positive reinforcement. Harsh methods do not work and often backfire. A poorly trained Presa Canario is genuinely dangerous due to its size and power.

Nutrition

Feed your Presa Canario a high-quality large-breed formula with real meat as the first ingredient. Two meals a day work better than one large serving. Avoid overfeeding since excess weight puts serious strain on the joints and heart. Add a joint supplement as your dog ages.

History

The Presa Canario comes from the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain, where farmers developed the breed to guard livestock and manage large, aggressive cattle. The name translates roughly to "Canarian catch dog." Spanish colonizers brought the breed back to the islands after crossbreeding with other mastiff-type dogs over centuries. The breed faced near extinction in the mid-1900s but survived through dedicated preservation efforts. Today it remains a serious guardian breed.
