Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Boerboels are a sturdy breed, often living 9 to 11 years. Hip and elbow dysplasia are concerns given their large, powerful build. Bloat is a real risk in this deep-chested breed, so meal management matters. Otherwise, this is a robust, generally healthy guardian breed.

Grooming

The short, dense coat is wonderfully low-maintenance. A weekly brush with a rubber mitt keeps shedding under control. Bathe only when dirty. Round out the routine with regular nail trims, ear checks, and dental care for this large breed.

Exercise

Powerful and athletic, Boerboels need a solid hour of exercise daily. Walks, structured play, and secure yard time suit them well. They were bred to patrol large properties, so they appreciate space to move. A securely fenced yard is essential given their guarding instincts.

Training

Intelligent but strong-willed, Boerboels need a confident, experienced owner. Early socialization is absolutely essential to manage their natural protective instincts. Positive reinforcement combined with firm consistency works best. This is not typically a breed for first-time dog owners.

Nutrition

A large-breed formula with quality protein supports their powerful frame. Two measured meals daily reduce bloat risk in this deep-chested breed. Avoid exercise right after eating. Joint supplements help support their substantial weight as they age.

History

Developed in South Africa by Dutch settlers, the Boerboel was bred to guard farms against dangerous wildlife and protect families. Their name means "farmer's dog" in Afrikaans. Bred for courage and loyalty above all else, they became indispensable to rural homesteads. The breed remains a serious, capable guardian today.
