Broholmers live 6 to 10 years, which is typical for a large mastiff-type breed. Hip dysplasia is the main orthopedic concern. Bloat is a real risk given their deep chest, so feed two meals daily and avoid exercise right after eating. Heart conditions also occur in the breed. Schedule regular vet visits and keep your dog at a healthy weight throughout their life.

The short, dense coat is easy to maintain with a weekly brush. Facial jowls and skin folds around the neck need regular wiping to prevent moisture buildup and infection. Bathe monthly or when genuinely needed. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Your Broholmer needs about 45 to 60 minutes of moderate exercise daily. Long walks suit their steady, calm nature well. Avoid intense exercise in heat since their large size and build make overheating a real concern. Puppies need controlled, gentle exercise to protect rapidly developing joints.

Broholmers are calm, confident, and trainable with patient, positive methods. They are not a highly reactive breed and generally respond well to consistent guidance. Early socialization is important given their size and natural guarding instinct. Start training from puppyhood since their eventual size means loose behavior is genuinely problematic. They bond closely to their family.

Feed a large-breed formula twice daily to reduce bloat risk. Puppies need a large-breed puppy formula that limits rapid bone growth. Add joint supplements as your dog ages. Avoid overfeeding since obesity dramatically worsens joint problems in this heavy-boned breed.

The Broholmer is an ancient Danish breed, documented as far back as the Middle Ages when Danish kings kept large mastiff-type dogs for hunting wild boar and guarding estates. The breed is named after Sehested of Broholm, who helped standardize the type in the 18th century. Broholmers nearly went extinct after World War II. The Danish Broholmer Society formed in 1974 and rebuilt the breed from surviving dogs found on old Danish farms. Today it remains rare outside Denmark.
