Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Black Russian Terriers typically live 10 to 11 years. Hip and elbow dysplasia are significant concerns given their large, powerful build. Certain heart conditions and eye issues occur occasionally too. Regular screening matters a great deal for this large working breed.

Grooming

That thick, wiry black coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks keeps the coat manageable. Facial hair needs regular trimming to keep their vision clear. Bathe as needed.

Exercise

Bred as a versatile working dog, this breed needs close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, structured training, and secure yard time suit them well. They have impressive strength and stamina built for demanding work. Mental engagement matters just as much as physical exercise for this intelligent breed.

Training

Highly intelligent but independent, Black Russian Terriers need a confident, experienced handler. Early socialization is essential given their natural protective instincts. Positive reinforcement combined with firm consistency works best. This is generally not a breed for first-time dog owners.

Nutrition

A large-breed formula with quality protein supports their powerful, muscular frame. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding for this big breed. Joint supplements help support their substantial weight as they age. Fresh water should always be available.

History

Developed by the Soviet military in the mid-1900s, this breed was bred specifically for guarding and military work in harsh climates. Breeders combined several working breeds including the Giant Schnauzer and Rottweiler to create a tough, versatile dog. The breed remained largely unknown outside Russia for decades. AKC recognized them in 2004.
