Pudelpointer

Pudelpointers are healthy, sturdy dogs that typically live 11 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia can occur given their active, athletic build. Ear infections are possible because of their floppy ears, especially after water work. This breed has benefited from careful selection for working ability, which has kept major hereditary health issues relatively rare.

The wiry, water-resistant coat needs brushing once or twice a week. Hand-stripping once or twice a year maintains the proper texture. Check ears after every swim or field outing and clean them to prevent infection. Bathe only when your dog is genuinely dirty. Nail trims every three to four weeks keep things comfortable.

Your Pudelpointer needs serious daily exercise, at least an hour of real activity. Running, swimming, field work, and scent games match this breed perfectly. Without enough outlet, your dog becomes restless and difficult to manage indoors. This is a working gun dog at heart and needs to be treated like one.

Pudelpointers are highly intelligent and genuinely enjoy working with their handler. Positive reinforcement training gets excellent results. Start early with basic commands, then build toward fieldwork if possible. They respond poorly to force and very well to clear, consistent guidance. Most owners find them a pleasure to train.

Feed a quality protein-rich diet that matches your dogs activity level. Active hunting dogs need more calories than pets with lighter exercise routines. Two measured meals per day works well for this breed. Fresh water is especially important after field sessions and water retrieves.

German hunters created the Pudelpointer in the late 1800s by crossing the German Hunting Poodle with the English Pointer. The goal was a single versatile dog that could point, track, and retrieve on both land and water. Breeder Baron von Zedlitz spent decades refining the breed and selecting strictly for working ability. The breed arrived in North America in the 1950s and remains primarily a hunters dog today.
