Health

Vizslas live 12 to 15 years. Hip dysplasia, certain eye conditions, and epilepsy occur in the breed. Sebaceous adenitis, a skin condition, and hypothyroidism are also documented. Certain cancers appear at higher rates than average. Source from health tested breeders and schedule annual vet visits. This is a generally healthy breed when bred responsibly.

Grooming

Your Vizsla has a short, rust colored coat that needs only a weekly brush. Shedding is light. Bathe monthly or when needed. Check ears weekly since they can trap moisture after swimming. Trim nails every three to four weeks and brush teeth regularly. Grooming takes minimal time with this breed.

Exercise

Your Vizsla needs at least 60 to 90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Running, swimming, field work, and agility match their athletic, energetic nature perfectly. Without enough outlet, Vizslas develop anxiety, destructive behavior, and excessive vocalization. This is a high energy sporting breed that thrives with an active owner.

Training

Vizslas are highly intelligent, sensitive, and eager to please. Positive reinforcement gets excellent results. Harsh corrections undermine their trust quickly so keep training gentle and consistent. Start socialization and field training early. They excel in obedience, agility, and hunting work and love having tasks that keep their mind engaged.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium to large breed formula twice daily calibrated to your dog activity level. Active Vizslas in the field need significantly more calories than lightly exercised pets. Monitor body condition monthly. Add omega 3 fatty acids to support coat and joint health.

History

The Vizsla is an ancient Hungarian breed with roots stretching back over a thousand years to hunting dogs kept by Magyar tribes in the Carpathian Basin. Hungarian nobility refined the breed over centuries as a versatile hunting companion. The breed survived World War II in small numbers as Hungarian breeders smuggled dogs out of the country to prevent total extinction under communist rule. The AKC recognized the Vizsla in 1960. Today it ranks among the most popular sporting breeds in the United States.
