Informacion i Detajuar për Racën

Health

Weimaraners live 10 to 13 years. Bloat is a serious and well documented risk in this deep chested breed so feed two meals daily and avoid exercise right after eating. Hip dysplasia, certain eye conditions, and hypothyroidism also occur. Spinal dysraphism, a developmental spinal condition, affects some lines. Source from health tested breeders and schedule regular vet visits.

Grooming

Your Weimaraner has a short, sleek silver gray coat that needs only a weekly brush. Shedding is light to moderate. Bathe monthly or when needed. Check ears weekly since their floppy shape traps moisture. Trim nails every three to four weeks and brush teeth regularly. This is one of the easiest coats to maintain of any large sporting breed.

Exercise

Your Weimaraner needs at least 90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Running, swimming, hunting, and agility match their incredible drive and stamina. Without enough physical and mental activity, Weimaraners become destructive, anxious, and impossible to live with indoors. This breed bonds intensely with their owner and should not be left alone for long periods.

Training

Weimaraners are highly intelligent and quick to learn but test boundaries constantly. Use positive reinforcement consistently from a confident owner. Start training and socialization from day one. They can develop separation anxiety so build independence from puppyhood. This breed excels in obedience, tracking, and hunting work when given proper structure.

Nutrition

Feed a high quality large breed formula twice daily to reduce bloat risk. Avoid a single large daily meal for this breed. Add joint supplements as your dog ages. Monitor body condition monthly. Adjust portions based on your dog actual activity level since their energy output varies significantly by individual.

History

The Weimaraner developed in Germany in the early 19th century, bred by German nobility at the court of Weimar to create the ideal all purpose hunting dog capable of tracking large game including deer, bear, and boar, then later adapted for bird hunting as large game became scarce. Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar is credited with developing the breed. German hunters kept the breed exclusively for many years, refusing to sell dogs to foreigners. The first Weimaraner arrived in the United States in 1929 and the AKC recognized the breed in 1943.
