Jagdterriers typically live 13 to 15 years and are a generally healthy, hardy breed. Patellar luxation and hip dysplasia occur occasionally. Being a relatively rare breed outside Germany helps keep the gene pool fairly diverse. Routine checkups keep this tough little hunting terrier thriving.

Whether smooth or wirehaired, this breed's coat is wonderfully low-maintenance. A weekly brush keeps shedding under control and the coat clean. Hand-stripping the wire coat occasionally maintains proper texture. Bathe only when needed.

Bred for hunting underground game, Jagdterriers need close to an hour of intense activity daily. Walks, digging, and scent games suit their relentless hunting drive well. Without enough outlet, their energy turns into determined mischief fast. A securely fenced area is essential given their strong prey drive.

Highly intelligent but fiercely independent, Jagdterriers need a confident, experienced handler. Early socialization is essential given their intense hunting and prey instincts. Positive reinforcement combined with firm consistency works best. This breed is generally not suited to first-time dog owners.

A small-to-medium breed formula with quality protein suits their high-energy lifestyle. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

Developed in Germany in the 1920s, the Jagdterrier was bred specifically for hunting foxes, badgers, and other game both above and below ground. German hunters wanted a fearless, relentless working terrier unlike the show-bred terriers of the time. The breed retains its intense working drive to this day, more often found in hunting roles than as a typical household pet. It remains relatively unknown outside its native Germany.
