Portuguese Podengo Pequenos typically live 12 to 15 years and are a generally healthy small breed. Patellar luxation and certain eye conditions occur occasionally. Otherwise, this breed's ancient working heritage has kept it remarkably hardy with few major health concerns.

Whether smooth or wirehaired, this breed's coat is wonderfully low-maintenance. A weekly brush keeps shedding under control and the coat clean. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims, ear checks, and dental care round out a simple routine for this easy-care breed.

Bred for hunting rabbits in burrows, the smallest of the Podengo varieties needs close to 45 minutes of real activity daily. Running, scent games, and securely fenced play suit their athletic drive well. Their prey drive is strong despite their small size, so off-leash exercise should stay contained. Mental stimulation through scent work keeps them genuinely satisfied.

Intelligent but independent, Portuguese Podengo Pequenos can be a bit challenging to train compared to typical companion breeds. Positive reinforcement and patience work best. Their hunting instincts make recall genuinely difficult once they catch a scent. Early socialization helps shape a well-rounded adult dog.

A small-breed formula with quality protein suits this lean, athletic little dog well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as small dogs gain weight quickly on excess treats. Fresh water should always be available.
