The American Eskimo

American Eskimos typically live 13 to 15 years, a great lifespan for their size. Hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy can occur, so screening matters. Some individuals develop allergies or skin issues. Otherwise, this is a robust, long-living companion breed.

That fluffy white double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring daily brushing then. Bathe every six to eight weeks to keep the coat bright. Never shave this breed — the coat regulates their temperature.

Don't let the fluffy look fool you — these dogs are genuinely energetic and need 45 to 60 minutes of activity daily. Walks, fetch, and agility-style games suit them well. They're smart and active, so mental stimulation matters just as much as physical exercise.

Highly intelligent and eager, American Eskimos are quick learners and often excel in obedience and tricks. Positive reinforcement works wonderfully with this breed. They can be vocal, so teaching a quiet command early helps. Socialization curbs their natural wariness of strangers.

A quality small-to-medium breed kibble suits their moderate size and activity level well. Two measured meals a day work better than free feeding. They can gain weight if under-exercised, so portion control matters. Omega-3s help maintain that signature fluffy white coat.

Despite the name, this breed has German roots, descending from German Spitz dogs brought by immigrants. They were renamed during World War I anti-German sentiment. The breed became a popular circus performer thanks to their intelligence and trainability. AKC recognized them in 1995, and they remain a cheerful family favorite.
