Health

Pomeranians typically live 12 to 16 years. Patellar luxation and dental crowding are common given their tiny size. Tracheal collapse, where the windpipe weakens, is also a notable concern, so a harness rather than a collar is often recommended. Heart issues can appear in older Pomeranians too.

Grooming

That thick, fluffy double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding and prevent matting. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring daily brushing then. Bathe every three to four weeks. Their tiny mouths need extra dental attention to prevent early tooth loss.

Exercise

Don't let the fluff fool you — Pomeranians are surprisingly energetic and need about 30 minutes of activity daily. Short walks and indoor play sessions suit them perfectly. They have a notably bold, confident personality for their size. Mental stimulation through games keeps their sharp mind satisfied.

Training

Intelligent and eager to please, Pomeranians generally train well with patient, positive methods. They can develop "small dog syndrome" without consistent boundaries, so early structure matters. Housetraining can take extra patience given their tiny bladders. Early socialization helps curb their natural wariness of strangers.

Nutrition

A small-breed formula with quality protein and small kibble suits this little dog well. Frequent small meals work better than large feedings, especially for puppies prone to low blood sugar. Watch portions extremely closely, as even small amounts of excess weight strain their tiny frame. Fresh water should always be available.

History

Descended from larger Spitz-type sled dogs, the Pomeranian was bred down significantly in size in Germany and England, particularly after Queen Victoria fell in love with a smaller specimen and began breeding even tinier dogs herself. The breed shrank dramatically in size over just a few decades under her influence. Their fox-like face and fluffy coat made them instant favorites of European nobility. Today the Pomeranian remains one of the most popular toy breeds worldwide.
