Health

Shiba Inus live 13 to 16 years. Hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and allergies are the main concerns. Progressive retinal atrophy and glaucoma occur in some lines. Hypothyroidism is also documented in the breed. Source from breeders who test for hips and eyes. Annual vet visits catch problems early with this generally hardy breed.

Grooming

Your Shiba Inu has a thick double coat that sheds moderately year round and heavily during twice yearly coat blows. Brush two to three times a week normally and daily during shedding season. Bathe every six to eight weeks. Shiba Inus groom themselves like cats and stay remarkably clean. Never shave the coat since it disrupts the insulating double layer.

Exercise

Your Shiba Inu needs 45 to 60 minutes of exercise daily. Brisk walks and securely fenced yard play suit them well. Never let them off leash in an unsecured area because their prey drive and independent nature make recall genuinely unreliable. They have real stamina and love exploring new environments on leash.

Training

Shiba Inus are intelligent but fiercely independent. They decide whether your instruction makes sense before acting on it. Use positive reinforcement with high value food rewards. Start early and stay consistent because this breed exploits any inconsistency fast. Socialize extensively in puppyhood to prevent shyness and reactivity toward strangers and other dogs.

Nutrition

Feed a quality small to medium breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Shiba Inus maintain a naturally lean build when properly exercised. Monitor body condition monthly. Keep treats minimal and choose small, low calorie options. Fresh water should always be available.

History

The Shiba Inu is the smallest of Japan six native breeds and one of the oldest dog breeds in existence. Japanese hunters used them for centuries to flush birds and small game in the dense mountain undergrowth. The breed came close to extinction after World War II due to distemper outbreaks and wartime hardship. Dedicated Japanese breeders rebuilt the population from surviving regional lines. Japan declared the Shiba Inu a national natural monument in 1936. Today it ranks among the most popular breeds in Japan and the United States.
