Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Sussex Spaniels live 11 to 13 years. Heart conditions including pulmonic stenosis occur at higher rates in this breed, so cardiac screening matters. Hip dysplasia and ear infections are also concerns given their build and floppy ears. Source from breeders who cardiac test and request results before buying a puppy. Annual vet visits with cardiac evaluation are worthwhile.

Grooming

Your Sussex Spaniel has a flat, wavy golden liver coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. Check ears after every outdoor session and dry them thoroughly to prevent infection. Bathe every four to six weeks. Trim feathering on the legs and ears occasionally for neatness. Trim nails every three to four weeks.

Exercise

Your Sussex Spaniel needs 45 to 60 minutes of moderate exercise daily. Walks, scent work, and field activities suit their steady, methodical hunting style well. They have real endurance built for slow, thorough work rather than speed. Mental stimulation through scent games keeps them genuinely engaged alongside physical activity.

Training

Sussex Spaniels are gentle, willing, and trainable with patient positive reinforcement. They can be slow and deliberate learners, so patience matters more than intensity. Socialize early since they can be reserved with strangers. This breed thrives with a calm, consistent owner and does well in field training and basic obedience.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Sussex Spaniels gain weight easily given their lower energy level. Monitor body condition closely and keep treats minimal. Two meals per day works far better than free feeding for this breed.

History

The Sussex Spaniel developed in the county of Sussex in southern England during the 1800s, bred for hunting in the heavy clay soils and dense underbrush of the region. Hunters there needed a slow, methodical dog that could thoroughly search cover rather than range widely at speed. The breed is one of the original nine breeds recognized by the AKC in 1884. Today it ranks among the rarest spaniel breeds, with very few puppies registered each year.
