Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Exotic Shorthairs live 12 to 15 years. Their flat face causes breathing difficulties related to Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome. Polycystic kidney disease is a well documented hereditary concern and breeders must test for it. Dental malocclusion and eye drainage issues from their facial structure also occur. Source from breeders who test for PKD and schedule regular vet visits with respiratory monitoring.

Grooming

Your Exotic Shorthair has a dense, plush short coat that needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Their flat face requires daily cleaning around the eyes to prevent staining from tears and discharge. Bathe every few weeks. Clean ears monthly, trim nails every two weeks, and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Exotic Shorthairs are calm and moderately active. They enjoy gentle play sessions but prefer relaxed indoor life over intense activity. Provide interactive toys and a low cat tree. Avoid strenuous exercise in heat given their flat face limits airflow. Two short, gentle play sessions daily keeps most Exotics content.

Training

Exotic Shorthairs are calm, sweet, and responsive to positive attention. They learn routines and respond to their name. They are not as active in seeking training as some breeds but they enjoy gentle interaction and treat rewards. Socialize kittens early. Their easygoing temperament makes them adaptable to most home environments.

Nutrition

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with measured portions. Exotic Shorthairs gain weight easily given their low activity level so control portions carefully. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Wet food supports hydration and kidney health. Always provide fresh water and monitor weight monthly.

History

The Exotic Shorthair developed in the United States in the 1960s when breeders crossed Persians with American Shorthairs in an attempt to improve the American Shorthair coat. The resulting kittens had the Persian face and body type with a shorter, easier to maintain coat. The Cat Fanciers Association recognized the Exotic Shorthair in 1967. The breed is sometimes called the lazy man Persian because it offers Persian looks without the daily coat brushing commitment.
