Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers live 12 to 14 years. Protein Losing Nephropathy and Protein Losing Enteropathy are the most serious hereditary concerns in this breed. Both affect the ability to retain protein and can be life threatening. Get annual urine and blood protein checks throughout your dog life. Hip dysplasia and renal dysplasia also occur. Source from breeders who screen breeding dogs for these conditions specifically.

Grooming

Your Wheaten has a soft, silky coat that does not shed much but mats quickly without consistent care. Brush three to four times a week to stay ahead of tangles. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks keeps the coat at a manageable length. Bathe every three to four weeks. Clean the beard after meals since it traps food and moisture daily.

Exercise

Your Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier needs 30 to 60 minutes of active exercise daily. Walks, fetch, and yard play match their spirited energy well. Secure fencing is essential since they have prey drive and dig with enthusiasm. Mental stimulation through training rounds out their needs alongside physical activity.

Training

Wheatens are intelligent, playful, and trainable but carry the independent streak common to terrier breeds. Use positive reinforcement consistently. Start early with socialization and basic obedience. Their enthusiasm makes sessions fun but their independence means you need to be the most interesting thing in the room. Short, varied sessions get the best results.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium breed, protein rich formula twice daily. Because of the breed risk for protein losing conditions, discuss diet choices with your vet at every annual visit. Some Wheatens benefit from low fat or modified protein diets as they age. Monitor closely and adjust based on your vet guidance.

History

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier developed in Ireland over several centuries as a versatile farm dog that hunted vermin, herded livestock, and guarded property. Unlike the sleeker English terrier breeds, the Wheaten retained a softer coat suited to Ireland wet, cool climate. Irish farmers kept this breed as a working dog rather than a fashionable show dog for generations. The Irish Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1937. The AKC recognized it in 1973.
