English Setters typically live 11 to 12 years. Hip dysplasia and deafness occur more frequently in this breed than average. Certain cancers are also noted as a concern. Otherwise, this is a generally elegant, gentle sporting breed.

That silky, feathered coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting, especially on the ears, legs, and tail. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks helps maintain the coat. Bathe every few weeks. Ears need regular checks given their floppy shape.

Bred as a versatile bird-hunting companion, English Setters need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, field work, and active play suit their athletic, gentle nature well.
