Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Brittanys live 12 to 14 years and are a generally healthy sporting breed. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur. Epilepsy is documented in some lines. Skin allergies are occasionally reported as well. Source from health-tested breeders and schedule annual vet visits. This is one of the healthier gun dog breeds overall when bred responsibly.

Grooming

The flat, wavy coat with light feathering needs brushing two to three times a week. Check ears after every field session or swim and dry them thoroughly to prevent infection. Bathe monthly or after heavy outdoor use. Trim feathering on the legs and ears to keep things neat. Nail trims every three to four weeks complete the routine.

Exercise

Your Brittany needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Field work, running, swimming, and agility all match this breeds high energy and drive. Without adequate exercise, they become hyperactive indoors and can develop anxious behaviors. This is one of the most energetic of all the spaniel-type breeds.

Training

Brittanys are intelligent, sensitive, and highly trainable with positive methods. They respond extremely well to praise and food rewards. Harsh corrections can make them shut down, so keep the tone positive and encouraging throughout. They point and retrieve instinctively and pick up field skills quickly. Basic obedience comes naturally when training starts early.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium-breed, protein-rich diet twice daily calibrated to your dogs activity level. Hunting Brittanys in the field need significantly more calories than lightly active pets. Adjust portions based on body condition. Omega-3 fatty acids support coat and joint health.

History

The Brittany developed in the Brittany region of northwestern France, where hunters bred a compact, versatile bird dog capable of pointing and retrieving on both land and in water. The breed likely descends from crosses between French and English spaniels in the 1800s. The first official breed standard was written in 1907. The Brittany arrived in the United States in the 1930s and quickly became a popular hunting companion. The AKC dropped "Spaniel" from its name in 1982 since it points like a setter rather than flushes like a spaniel.
