Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Working Kelpies live 12 to 15 years and are a generally healthy, athletic working breed. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur occasionally. Progressive retinal atrophy has been noted in some lines. As a breed selected strictly for working ability, physical soundness is a priority. Annual vet visits and a lean body weight keep most Working Kelpies healthy throughout their demanding working life.

Grooming

Your Working Kelpie has a short, weather resistant double coat that needs only a weekly brush. Shedding increases during seasonal coat blows. Bathe only when genuinely needed since the coat naturally repels dirt. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Exercise

Your Working Kelpie needs well over 90 minutes of intense exercise and mental work daily. This breed was built to run dozens of miles a day across vast Australian stations. Without a real job or exhaustive daily activity, they develop anxiety and destructive behavior. This is not a companion dog. This breed needs work.

Training

Working Kelpies are among the most intelligent herding breeds alive. They learn with extraordinary speed and need constant mental challenge to stay balanced. Positive reinforcement gets fast results. Give them a herding or working task and they excel. Without mental stimulation to match their ability, they develop obsessive behaviors quickly.

Nutrition

Feed a high quality protein rich formula daily calibrated to your dog actual workload. Working Kelpies burn exceptional amounts of calories during active herding days. Lightly exercised pet Kelpies need carefully controlled portions. Monitor body condition closely. Fresh water must be available at all times especially during heavy work.

History

The Working Kelpie developed in Australia in the 19th century from imported Collie type dogs, bred specifically to handle the vast distances and harsh conditions of Australian sheep stations. The name comes from a water spirit in Scottish folklore. A bitch named Kelpie won a sheep dog trial in 1873 and gave the breed its name. Australian farmers relied on these dogs to muster enormous flocks across millions of acres with minimal human direction. Today the Working Kelpie remains an active working breed on Australian farms.
