Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Standard Schnauzers live 13 to 16 years. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur in the breed. Bladder stones and skin allergies show up in some lines. Overall this is a healthy, long lived breed when you source from a responsible breeder who health tests. Annual vet visits keep most Standard Schnauzers in excellent condition throughout their life.

Grooming

Your Standard Schnauzer has a wiry double coat that needs brushing two to three times a week. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks keeps the classic Schnauzer profile tidy. Hand stripping maintains the correct coat texture for show dogs. The beard collects food daily so clean it after meals. Check ears weekly and trim nails monthly.

Exercise

Your Standard Schnauzer needs 45 to 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Walks, fetch, agility, and structured play all match their energetic, athletic nature. Without enough physical and mental activity, they become vocal and destructive fast. This is a working breed in a mid sized package and needs to be treated that way.

Training

Standard Schnauzers are highly intelligent and quick to learn. Use positive reinforcement consistently. Start socialization and obedience from puppyhood since they will test boundaries with a less confident owner. They excel in obedience, agility, and tracking. Keep training varied and challenging because they bore quickly with repetition.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Standard Schnauzers can gain weight if exercise drops. Monitor body condition monthly. Keep treats minimal and use them primarily as training rewards. Fresh water should always be available.

History

The Standard Schnauzer is the original Schnauzer, developed in Germany during the 15th and 16th centuries as a versatile farm dog skilled at ratting, herding, and guarding property. German farmers valued their intelligence and adaptability across many tasks. The Miniature and Giant Schnauzers were later developed from the Standard by breeding up or down in size. The breed served as a messenger and guard dog in World War I. Today the Standard Schnauzer remains a capable, alert working companion.
