Pekingese

Canis lupus familiaris  ·  China

The Pekingese is a small, regal dog with a luxurious long coat and a dignified, independent personality. Originally bred as a companion to Chinese royalty, the Pekingese is affectionate with family members but reserved with strangers. Their unique appearance and calm demeanor make them ideal for apartment living, but they do require regular grooming and attention to health. Despite their small size, they carry themselves with a confident and sometimes aloof attitude.

Informations Détaillées sur la Race

Health

Pekingese dogs typically live 12 to 14 years. Being a brachycephalic breed, breathing difficulties are a significant concern, especially in heat. Eye injuries and intervertebral disc disease also occur given their facial structure and long back. Many require C-sections for birth, which is worth knowing before breeding.

Grooming

That long, flowing double coat needs brushing several times a week to prevent serious matting. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks helps maintain the coat. Facial wrinkles need regular wiping to prevent skin infections. Bathe every two to three weeks.

Exercise

This small breed has gentle, modest energy and needs about 20 minutes of activity daily. Short walks and indoor play sessions suit them well. Their shortened muzzle means heat tolerance is very limited, so always avoid exercise in warm weather. Watch closely for heavy panting or distress during any activity.

Training

Intelligent but notably independent and dignified, Pekingese dogs can be a genuine training challenge. Positive reinforcement and patience work best with this breed. Early socialization helps round out their naturally aloof, confident temperament. This breed genuinely carries itself with a regal, somewhat stubborn attitude.

Nutrition

A small-breed formula with quality protein suits this little dog's needs. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as excess weight worsens their breathing difficulties significantly. Fresh water should always be available.

History

One of the oldest dog breeds, the Pekingese has been a treasured companion of Chinese emperors for over a thousand years, historically kept exclusively within the Forbidden City. Stealing one was once punishable by death, reflecting the breed's sacred status. When British forces looted the Summer Palace in 1860, several Pekingese were taken to England, including one famously gifted to Queen Victoria. The breed remains a dignified, ancient companion known for its lion-like appearance.
