Skye Terriers live 12 to 15 years. Their long back makes them prone to intervertebral disc disease, so limit jumping from an early age. Premature closure of growth plates, known as puppy limp, occurs in young Skyes and relates to over exercise during development. Your Skye Terrier has a long, flat coat that parts down the middle and reaches the floor. Brush two to three times a week to stay ahead of mats. The hair over the face and eyes needs regular trimming so your dog can see clearly. Bathe monthly. Check ears weekly and trim nails every three to four weeks.

Your Skye Terrier needs 30 to 45 minutes of moderate exercise daily. Walks and gentle yard play suit their steady, dignified nature. Limit jumping and rough play to protect their long back. Avoid over exercising puppies since bone development issues can result. Mental stimulation through training rounds out their daily needs.

Skye Terriers are intelligent and deeply loyal but form strong bonds with one or two people and stay reserved with everyone else. Use positive reinforcement consistently. Start socialization in puppyhood since their reserved nature can harden into wariness without early exposure. They respond best to a calm, patient owner who respects their dignity.

Feed a quality small breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Monitor body condition monthly since the long coat makes visual assessment difficult. Keep treats minimal. Two meals per day works better than one large serving. Fresh water should always be available.

The Skye Terrier developed on the Isle of Skye off the northwest coast of Scotland, bred by farmers to hunt fox, badger, and otter in rocky island terrain. The breed became fashionable with Queen Victoria in the 1840s and entered a period of enormous popularity among British aristocracy. The most famous Skye Terrier was Greyfriars Bobby, who reportedly guarded his owner grave in Edinburgh for 14 years after his owner death in 1858. A statue of Bobby still stands near the cemetery in Edinburgh today.
