Australian Terrier

Australian Terriers are a hardy little breed, often living 12 to 15 years. Patellar luxation and allergies are the main things to watch for. Diabetes appears slightly more often in this breed than average. Otherwise, this is a robust, long-living companion.

That wiry double coat needs brushing once or twice a week to stay tidy. Hand-stripping a couple times a year maintains the proper texture. Bathe only occasionally since frequent washing softens the coat. Nail trims and teeth brushing round out the routine.

Small but spirited, Australian Terriers need about 30 to 45 minutes of activity daily. Walks, fetch, and digging in the yard all satisfy their terrier instincts. They have surprising stamina for their size. Mental stimulation through training games keeps boredom away.

Intelligent and a bit independent, this terrier responds best to upbeat, positive training. Short, fun sessions hold their attention better than long ones. Early socialization helps curb any small-dog bossiness. They genuinely enjoy learning new tricks and games.

A small-breed formula with quality protein suits this active little dog well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as small breeds gain weight quickly on excess treats. Fresh water should always be available.

Developed by early settlers in Australia, this breed was bred to control vermin and guard homesteads in a harsh environment. It holds the distinction of being one of the first breeds developed in Australia to gain recognition abroad. Tough and adaptable, the breed has changed little since those early working days.
