LaPerms live 12 to 15 years and are a generally healthy breed. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs in the breed and cardiac screening matters. No widespread breed specific genetic diseases have been identified beyond cardiac concerns. Being a naturally occurring mutation breed helps maintain genetic diversity. Annual vet visits and basic preventive care keep most LaPerms healthy throughout their life.

Your LaPerm has a curly or wavy coat in either shorthaired or longhaired varieties. Brush two to three times a week to manage shedding and prevent loose curl tangles. Mist the coat lightly with water to enhance curl definition after brushing. Bathe occasionally. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

LaPerms are active, curious, and playful. They enjoy interactive toys, climbing, and time with their owners. They adapt well to both active and calmer home environments. Provide wand toys, a cat tree, and daily play sessions. Two play sessions of ten to fifteen minutes daily keeps most LaPerms satisfied.

LaPerms are intelligent, social, and respond well to treat based training. They enjoy learning their name, tricks, and routines. They are affectionate cats that enjoy human company and follow their owners around. Socialize kittens early. Their adaptable, friendly nature makes them easy to introduce to new people and situations.

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with measured portions. LaPerms stay naturally lean when adequately active. Monitor weight monthly. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Wet food supports hydration. Always provide fresh water. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding.

The LaPerm originated on a cherry farm in The Dalles, Oregon, in 1982 when a curly coated kitten named Curly was born in a litter of barn cats. Owner Linda Koehl did not initially realize the significance of the mutation. Years later the curly cats had multiplied on the farm and Koehl began a deliberate breeding program. Geneticists confirmed the LaPerm mutation was unique and dominant. The breed was named for its permed looking coat. TICA recognized the LaPerm in 2003.
