European Burmese cats live 16 to 18 years. They are generally healthy but hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs in the breed. Hypokalaemia, a potassium deficiency causing muscle weakness, affects some European Burmese lines. Cranial deformities from certain breeding pairings require careful genetic management. Diabetes mellitus also appears more often than in many other breeds. Annual vet visits keep most individuals thriving.

Your European Burmese has a short, glossy, satiny coat that needs only a quick weekly brush. They groom themselves efficiently so baths are rarely needed. Brush teeth frequently since dental disease is a common problem. Trim nails every two weeks and clean ears monthly. Grooming takes minimal time with this breed.

European Burmese cats are playful, affectionate, and retain kitten energy for years. They enjoy interactive play sessions, climbing, and games with their owners. Provide wand toys, a cat tree, and puzzle feeders daily. Without enough stimulation they become clingy and vocal. Two play sessions of ten to fifteen minutes daily keeps them balanced.

The European Burmese responds enthusiastically to treat rewards and learns tricks, games, and routines quickly. They are social, curious, and thrive on interaction. Socialize kittens early with different people and situations. They follow their owners and enjoy being involved in daily life. Training stays easy when you make it fun.

Feed a quality protein rich diet with wet food as the primary component. Two measured meals daily prevent overeating in this food motivated breed. Monitor weight carefully since compact body structure can hide gradual gain. Choose foods with real meat as the first ingredient. Always provide fresh water.

The European Burmese developed from the same foundation stock as the American Burmese, both tracing back to Wong Mau, a brown female cat brought from Burma to the United States in 1930. European breeders developed the line along different standards, producing a more foreign, slender type compared to the rounder American Burmese. The two varieties are now considered distinct breeds by most registries. The European Burmese includes a wider range of colors than the American variety.
