Detaillierte Rasseninformationen

Health

Parson Russell Terriers typically live 13 to 15 years, an excellent lifespan. Patellar luxation and certain eye conditions occur occasionally. Lens luxation, an eye condition, is also noted in the breed. Otherwise, this is a generally hardy, long-living terrier.

Grooming

Whether smooth or broken coated, this breed needs brushing once or twice a week to manage shedding. Hand-stripping the broken coat occasionally helps maintain texture. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims and dental care round out the routine for this active breed.

Exercise

Bred for fox hunting, Parson Russell Terriers need intense daily exercise — close to an hour or more of real activity. Running, fetch, and active play suit their relentless energy well. Without enough outlet, their energy turns into determined mischief fast. This breed genuinely needs serious daily exercise to stay balanced.

Training

Highly intelligent but strong-willed, Parson Russell Terriers need confident, consistent handling. Positive reinforcement and patience produce the best results. Early socialization helps manage their intense prey drive and energy. This breed thrives with an active owner who provides both physical and mental challenges.

Nutrition

A small-to-medium breed formula with quality protein suits this high-energy dog well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Watch portions closely, as they can gain weight if under-exercised. Fresh water should always be available.

History

Developed in England by Reverend John Russell in the 1800s, this breed was bred specifically for fox hunting, needing both the speed to keep pace with hounds and the courage to go to ground after foxes. The breed was eventually split from the shorter-legged Jack Russell Terrier based on leg length and body proportions. Renamed in honor of its founder, the breed remains an intensely energetic, capable working terrier today.
