Brazilian Terrier

Brazilian Terriers live 12 to 14 years and are a generally healthy, hardy breed. Patellar luxation and certain eye conditions occur occasionally given their small-to-medium size. As a relatively rare breed outside Brazil, widespread hereditary health data is limited. Source from responsible breeders and keep up with routine vet visits.

The short, tricolored coat is easy to maintain with a weekly brush. Shedding is light. Bathe monthly or when your dog needs it. Check ears weekly, trim nails every three to four weeks, and brush teeth regularly. This is one of the lowest-maintenance coats of any terrier breed.

Your Brazilian Terrier needs 45 to 60 minutes of active exercise daily. Walks, fetch, and agility-style games all suit their energetic nature well. Secure fencing matters since they have a strong prey drive and will pursue small animals. Mental stimulation through training and puzzle toys keeps their quick minds satisfied.

Brazilian Terriers are intelligent, alert, and quicker to learn than many terrier breeds. Positive reinforcement training works well. Start socialization early since they can be reserved with strangers. Keep sessions short and fun since they bore quickly with repetition. Their natural alertness makes them easy to shape when training is consistent.

Feed a small-to-medium breed formula with quality protein twice daily. Measure portions carefully and keep treats minimal to prevent weight gain. Brazilian Terriers stay naturally active but can gain weight if overfed and under-exercised. Fresh water should always be available.

The Brazilian Terrier developed in Brazil in the 19th century when Brazilian students returning from Europe brought Fox Terriers home, which were then crossed with Miniature Pinschers and possibly Chihuahuas. The resulting breed adapted well to the Brazilian climate and became a popular rat catcher on farms and in homes. The breed remains widespread in Brazil as a working farm dog and companion but is virtually unknown outside South America.
