Singapura Cat

Singapura cats live 11 to 15 years. Pyruvate kinase deficiency occurs in the breed and breeders should test for it. Uterine inertia, difficulty giving birth without assistance, affects some females. Progressive retinal atrophy has been documented. The breed has a small gene pool given its limited original foundation stock, making health testing especially important. Annual vet visits protect long term health.

Your Singapura has a short, fine, silky ticked coat that needs minimal grooming. Brush once a week to remove loose hair and keep the coat shiny. They groom themselves very efficiently so baths are rarely needed. Trim nails every two weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth regularly. This is one of the easiest coats of any cat breed.

Singapuras are curious, active, and playful despite their small size. They love climbing, perching in high places, and interactive games with their owners. Provide a tall cat tree and daily wand toy play. Two active play sessions daily keeps most Singapuras content. They remain playful well into adulthood.

Singapuras are intelligent, sociable, and respond well to treat based training. They learn their name and tricks readily. They enjoy being involved in household activities and follow their owners around. Socialize kittens early since they can be cautious in new situations. Their affectionate, people oriented nature makes training rewarding.

Feed a quality protein rich diet twice daily with measured portions. Singapuras are the smallest of all domestic cat breeds so portions must be calibrated carefully to avoid underfeeding or overfeeding. Choose foods with real meat first. Wet food supports hydration. Always provide fresh water. Monitor weight monthly.

The Singapura traces back to small drain cats living in the streets and drains of Singapore. American breeders Tommy and Hal Meadow brought three small ticked cats from Singapore to the United States in 1975 and developed the breed from those individuals. The breed was named after its city of origin. Singapore later adopted the Singapura as a national mascot and tourism symbol, calling it the Kucinta or love cat. TICA recognized the Singapura in 1979 and the CFA in 1982.
