The Thai Bangkaew Dog developed in the Bang Kaew district of Phichit province in central Thailand, where villagers kept them as guard dogs and hunting companions near the Yom River. Local legend holds that a monastery abbot crossbred a local dog with a wild animal in the 19th century, producing the foundation stock. The breed remained regional for decades. The Thai Kennel Club recognized the Thai Bangkaew in 1957. Outside Thailand, this breed remains very rare.
