Norwegian Elkhound

Norwegian Elkhounds typically live 12 to 15 years. Hip dysplasia and a kidney condition called progressive renal atrophy occur in the breed. Certain eye conditions are also noted. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, hardy breed well-suited to cold climates.

That thick, gray double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring daily brushing then. Bathe only when needed, as their coat naturally resists dirt and cold. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Bred for hunting moose and other large game across Norwegian forests, Norwegian Elkhounds need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, scent games, and active play suit their athletic, alert nature well. They have real stamina and a genuine love of cold weather. Mental stimulation through scent work keeps them genuinely satisfied.

Intelligent but independent, Norwegian Elkhounds can be a bit of a training challenge. Positive reinforcement and patience produce the best results. Early socialization helps round out their naturally bold, confident temperament. This breed genuinely enjoys having a scenting or tracking task to focus on.

A medium-breed formula with quality protein suits their active hunting lifestyle. Two measured meals daily work well for this breed. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.
