Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

Norwegian Buhunds typically live 12 to 15 years and are a generally healthy breed. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur occasionally. Otherwise, this is a hardy, long-living breed with few major health concerns.

Grooming

That thick double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases heavily during seasonal coat blows, requiring daily brushing then. Bathe only when needed, as their coat naturally resists dirt. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Bred for herding sheep across Norwegian farms, Norwegian Buhunds need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, herding games, and active play suit their athletic, alert nature well. They have real stamina paired with genuine enthusiasm for work. Mental stimulation matters just as much as physical exercise.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to please, Norwegian Buhunds generally train very well. Positive reinforcement produces excellent results. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, alert temperament. This breed genuinely enjoys learning new tasks and excels at herding-related activities.

Nutrition

A medium-breed formula with quality protein suits their active herding lifestyle. Two measured meals daily support steady energy throughout busy days. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

An ancient Norwegian breed, the Norwegian Buhund has herded sheep and guarded farms across Norway for over a thousand years, with Viking-era graves containing dogs resembling the breed. Norwegian farmers valued their versatility, alertness, and tireless work ethic in harsh Nordic conditions. The breed remains relatively rare outside Norway today. It's cherished for its cheerful, hardworking temperament.
