Detailed Breed Information

Health

Portuguese Sheepdogs are a generally healthy breed, often living 12 to 14 years. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions occur occasionally. Being a relatively rare breed helps keep the gene pool fairly diverse. Routine vet visits keep this versatile herding breed thriving.

Grooming

That shaggy, medium-length coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Their hair can grow over the eyes, so occasional trimming helps maintain clear vision. Bathe only when needed. Nail trims and ear checks round out a simple routine.

Exercise

Bred for herding livestock across Portugal's varied terrain, this breed needs close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, herding games, and agility suit their athletic, alert nature well. They have real stamina paired with genuine enthusiasm for work. Mental stimulation matters just as much as physical exercise.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to please, Portuguese Sheepdogs generally train very well. Positive reinforcement produces excellent results. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, alert temperament. This breed genuinely enjoys learning new tasks and excels at herding-related activities.

Nutrition

A medium-breed formula with quality protein suits their active herding lifestyle. Two measured meals daily support steady energy throughout busy days. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

Developed in Portugal centuries ago, this breed was bred by farmers to herd sheep and cattle across the country's varied terrain, valued for its intelligence and versatility. Portuguese shepherds relied on the breed's tireless work ethic and alert nature for daily farm tasks. The breed remained largely unknown outside Portugal until recent decades. It's slowly gaining international recognition as a capable, loyal herding companion.
