Informazioni Dettagliate sulla Razza

Health

The Barbado da Terceira is a generally healthy breed with a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. Hip dysplasia can occur given their active herding build. As a relatively rare breed, hereditary health data is still limited, so source your puppy from a responsible breeder who health-tests their dogs. Routine checkups and a lean body weight go a long way.

Grooming

The shaggy, medium-length coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Hair around the eyes needs regular trimming so your dog can see clearly. Bathe when needed. Check ears weekly and trim nails every three to four weeks to complete the routine.

Exercise

Your Barbado da Terceira needs at least an hour of exercise daily. This is a working herding breed with real stamina and drive. Walks, active play, and scent games all work well. Without enough daily activity, your dog gets restless and may start herding people or other animals in the house.

Training

This breed is intelligent and generally easy to train with consistent positive reinforcement. Start socialization early so your dog grows comfortable around strangers, children, and other animals. Their herding instincts can show up as nipping, which you can redirect through training. Give them a job or structured activity and they thrive.

Nutrition

Feed a quality medium-breed formula with good protein content twice daily. Watch portions carefully since working breeds in lower-activity home environments can gain weight. Your dogs body condition tells you more than the bag guidelines do. Keep fresh water available at all times.

History

The Barbado da Terceira developed on Terceira Island in the Azores, Portugal, where farmers used it to herd cattle. The breeds name means "bearded dog from Terceira." Centuries of island isolation produced a hardy, versatile herder well-suited to the rugged volcanic terrain. Portuguese breed clubs formally preserved and recognized the breed in the late 20th century. Outside Portugal, the breed remains very rare today.
