Detailed Breed Information

Health

Lagotto Romagnolos typically live 15 to 17 years, an excellent lifespan. Hip dysplasia and a hereditary neurological condition affecting puppies have been documented in the breed. Otherwise, this is a generally healthy, long-living breed valued for its low-shedding coat.

Grooming

That curly, woolly coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks keeps the coat manageable. Bathe as needed. Their coat is famously low-shedding, making them a popular choice for allergy-sensitive households.

Exercise

Bred originally as a water retriever and now famous as a truffle hunter, Lagotto Romagnolos need close to an hour of activity daily. Walks, scent work, and active play suit their athletic, scent-driven nature well. They have real stamina and an exceptional nose for tracking scents. Mental stimulation through scent games keeps them genuinely satisfied.

Training

Highly intelligent and eager to please, Lagotto Romagnolos generally train very well. Positive reinforcement produces excellent results, especially for scent-based tasks. Early socialization rounds out their naturally friendly, alert temperament. This breed genuinely enjoys learning and excels at scent work activities.

Nutrition

A medium-breed formula with quality protein suits their active lifestyle well. Two measured meals daily work well for this breed. Watch portions during less active periods to avoid weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

History

One of the oldest water retrieving breeds, the Lagotto Romagnolo originated in the marshlands of Romagna, Italy, where it retrieved waterfowl for hunters. As the marshes were drained over time, the breed's exceptional nose found new purpose hunting valuable truffles in the forests of Italy. Today it remains the only breed officially recognized as a specialized truffle-hunting dog, prized worldwide for both this unique skill and its low-shedding coat.
