Detailed Breed Information

Health

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers typically live 10 to 13 years. Hip dysplasia and certain eye conditions are the main concerns given their active, muscular build. Some skin issues occur given their water-loving lifestyle. Otherwise, this is a hardy, resilient retrieving breed.

Grooming

The dense, wavy, water-resistant coat needs brushing once or twice a week to manage shedding. Shedding increases during seasonal coat blows. Bathe only when needed, as their oily coat naturally resists dirt and water. Dry thoroughly after swimming to prevent skin irritation.

Exercise

Bred for retrieving waterfowl in icy conditions, this breed absolutely loves to swim and needs close to an hour of activity daily. Fetch, swimming, and field work suit them perfectly. They have impressive stamina and a genuine love of water. Mental stimulation through retrieving games keeps them happily engaged.

Training

Intelligent but independent, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers can be a bit more stubborn than other retriever breeds. Positive reinforcement and consistency work best. Early socialization helps shape their naturally protective, loyal temperament. They thrive with a confident handler and a clear sense of purpose.

Nutrition

A high-quality protein-rich diet suits this athletic, muscular breed well. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding. Fresh water should always be available, especially after swimming sessions. Watch their weight during less active periods.

History

Developed along the Chesapeake Bay in the early 1800s, this breed descends from two Newfoundland-type puppies rescued from a shipwreck, later crossed with local retrievers. Bred to retrieve waterfowl in the bay's frigid, choppy waters, their tough, water-resistant coat became essential. The breed remains a hardworking favorite among waterfowl hunters today.
