Informacion i Detajuar për Racën

Health

Tosas live 10 to 12 years. Hip dysplasia and bloat are significant concerns given their large, deep chested build. Feed two meals daily and avoid exercise right after eating to reduce bloat risk. Certain skin conditions and heart issues occur in the breed as well. Source from responsible breeders who health test and schedule regular vet visits. Keep your dog lean throughout their life.

Grooming

Your Tosa has a short, dense coat that needs only a weekly brush. Facial wrinkles and jowls need regular wiping to prevent moisture buildup and skin infection. Bathe every four to six weeks. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly. This is a low maintenance coat for a large breed.

Exercise

Your Tosa needs 45 to 60 minutes of moderate exercise daily. Walks and structured play suit their calm, deliberate nature. Avoid intense activity in heat given their size and build. A securely fenced area is essential at all times. Without consistent exercise their strength and energy become difficult to manage indoors.

Training

Tosas are intelligent but require a highly experienced, confident owner. Start training and socialization from day one without exception. Use positive reinforcement consistently. Their size and power mean that untrained behavior has serious consequences. This breed is genuinely not suited to first time or inexperienced dog owners. Professional guidance from the start is strongly recommended.

Nutrition

Feed a large breed formula twice daily to reduce bloat risk. Puppies need a controlled growth large breed diet. Add joint supplements from middle age. Avoid overfeeding since obesity shortens this breed life significantly. Fresh water should always be available in large quantities.

History

The Tosa developed in Japan during the Meiji period in the late 1800s when Japanese breeders crossed native Shikoku Ken dogs with imported European breeds including the Mastiff, Great Dane, Saint Bernard, and Bulldog. Japanese breeders aimed to create a large, powerful dog suited to Japanese dog fighting traditions, where the ideal dog fought silently and with dignity. The breed was nearly wiped out during World War II due to food shortages. Dedicated Japanese breeders rebuilt the population after the war.
