Dogo Argentino

Dogo Argentinos typically live 9 to 15 years. Deafness occurs more frequently in this all-white breed than most, so hearing tests for puppies are common. Hip dysplasia and certain skin conditions also occur given their build. Otherwise, this is a generally hardy, athletic breed.

That short, white coat is wonderfully low-maintenance. A weekly brush keeps shedding under control and the coat clean. Being light-colored and short-coated, sun protection matters during long outdoor time. Bathe only when needed.

Bred for big game hunting, Dogo Argentinos need intense daily exercise — well over an hour of real activity. Running, structured play, and secure yard time suit their athletic drive well. Without enough outlet, their strength and energy become difficult to manage. A securely fenced area is essential given their strong prey drive.

Intelligent but strong-willed, Dogo Argentinos need a confident, experienced owner. Early socialization is absolutely essential given their natural protective and hunting instincts. Positive reinforcement combined with firm consistency works best. This breed is generally not suited to first-time dog owners.

A high-quality protein-rich diet supports their powerful, athletic build. Two measured meals daily work better than free feeding for this large breed. Joint supplements help support their muscular frame as they age. Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise.

Developed in Argentina in the 1920s by Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez, this breed was bred specifically for hunting wild boar and puma across the country's rugged terrain. He combined several breeds to create a powerful, all-white hunting dog with a calm temperament toward family. The breed remains a serious big-game hunting companion and guardian in its native Argentina today.
