Small Munsterlander

Your Small Munsterlander has a medium length, feathered coat that needs brushing two to three times a week to stay tangle free. Check ears after every field session or swim and dry them thoroughly to prevent infection. Bathe monthly or after heavy field use. Trim feathering on the legs and ears occasionally for neatness.

Your Small Munsterlander needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Field work, running, swimming, and scent activities match their endurance and drive perfectly. They are versatile gun dogs that genuinely love water and open terrain. Without consistent activity, they become restless and difficult to manage indoors.

Small Munsterlanders are intelligent, willing, and generally a pleasure to train. They respond very well to positive reinforcement. Start socialization and field training early. They develop pointing and retrieving instincts naturally and pick up hunting skills quickly with calm guidance. This breed bonds closely to their handler.

Feed a quality medium breed formula with good protein twice daily. Hunting dogs in the field need more calories than lightly active pets. Adjust portions based on actual workload and body condition. Fresh water is especially important after field sessions and swimming.

The Small Munsterlander developed in the Munster region of Germany, descended from the same old German spaniel and setter stock that produced the Large Munsterlander. German hunters in the late 1800s refined the smaller type for hunters who wanted a more compact, agile gun dog. The breed excels at pointing, tracking, and retrieving on both land and water. Today it remains popular among German hunters and is slowly gaining recognition internationally as an outstanding versatile hunting companion.
