Shikoku

The Shikoku lives 10 to 12 years and is a generally healthy primitive breed. Hip dysplasia occurs occasionally. Being a rare breed outside Japan, widespread hereditary health data is limited, so choose a responsible breeder carefully. This breed developed through natural selection in rugged Japanese mountain conditions, which has kept it physically sound. Routine annual vet visits keep most Shikokus healthy.

Your Shikoku has a double coat that sheds moderately year round and heavily during twice yearly coat blows. Brush two to three times a week normally and daily during shedding seasons. Bathe only when genuinely needed since the coat stays naturally clean. Check ears weekly, trim nails monthly, and brush teeth regularly.

Your Shikoku needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Running, hiking, and scent activities match their hunting heritage well. Secure fencing is essential since their prey drive and independent nature make off leash reliability genuinely difficult. They have excellent stamina built for mountain terrain.

Shikokus are intelligent but independent and they follow their own judgment rather than commands. Use positive reinforcement with patience and high value rewards. Start socialization from day one since this breed can be reserved and wary with strangers. Consistency matters more than intensity with this breed. Build trust first and compliance follows.

Feed a quality medium breed formula twice daily with measured portions. Adjust calories based on your dog activity level since hunting dogs need more than lightly active pets. Monitor body condition monthly. Two meals per day works better than one. Fresh water should always be available.

The Shikoku is one of Japan six native breeds, developed on the island of Shikoku by local hunters to track and hold large game including boar through dense mountain forest. Their agility, stamina, and fearlessness in rugged terrain made them invaluable working partners. Japan designated the Shikoku a natural monument in 1937. The breed remained isolated on its native island for centuries and stays relatively rare even within Japan today. Outside Japan, the Shikoku is virtually unknown.
